With that constant buzzing as its soundtrack the World Cup literally is creating the global buzz in sports right now.
In America, much of the chatter is around the rookie pitching sensation Stephen Strasburg, a true phenom whose nearly mythical arrival in the major leagues has been the most anticipated and talked-about in years.
The buzz in basketball? The looming summer of free agency, now 16 days away, with LeBron James and Miami’s own Dwyane Wade leading the parade of available superstars portending a seismic shift in that sport’s landscape.
Amid all the global buzzing and stateside buzz, this NBA Finals was in danger of being drowned out — of quietly playing little more than an appetizer to free agency, not even the biggest thing in its own league. It was going to take a great, memorable Finals to be seen and heard as more than just background noise.
Well, consider it done.
Basketball has its two most storied franchises up against the World Cup, with the Boston Celtics’ 17 championships and the Lakers’ 15 in Los Angeles trailing only the New York Yankees’ 27 among American teams in the big-four sports.
